O Cio da terra | Ócio da terra (Sep, 2023)

We are thrilled to announce Josué Mattos as curator of the next The55Project Collective Show, opening on September 23rd, 2023, in Miami, at Fundación Pablo Atchugarry. As an art historian and curator who graduated in History of Art and Archeology at Université Paris X Nanterre, Mattos has contributed to some museums and art centers in Brazil, Europe, and Japan since 2009, when he completed his Master Degree in Contemporary Art History (Paris X Nanterre) and in Curatorial Practices at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. He co-founded the Veras Cultural Centre on the Island of Florianópolis, Brazil.

The project preparation for its annual collective exhibition was conceived as part of the Veras Cultural Centre's perennial laboratory for germinating biodiverse futures and mental reforestation. Indeed, by mirroring the titles' song written and composed by Milton Nascimento and Chico Buarque in 1977, the exhibition 'O Cio da Terra, Ócio da Terra" echoes voices advocating for life rights, reforming unproductive areas and preserving the sacrality of the earth. In that sense, the group show generates narratives resonating with 'florestania,' a conception of the future that replaces some principles of citizenship with forest knowledge and a way of life. One is the cycles of pause and fertility that characterize all life forms as a derivation of ócio (leisure) and cio (heat).
