About the Program

Our residency program supports artists by providing time, space, and context for research, experimentation, and meaningful exchange. Through an open call, we invite artists from diverse backgrounds and practices who are interested in engaging with Miami’s dynamic cultural landscape.

For the 2026 edition, and for the third consecutive year, the residency will take place in collaboration with El Espacio 23 in Miami. The program encourages artistic research, professional exchange, and public engagement. During the residency, artists will have the opportunity to share their process through open studios and conversations with students, collectors, and members of the local arts community.

Finalists will be invited to meet with the selection committee and The55Project team as part of the selection process.

Important Details

    • Open to all Brazilian visual artists living in Brazil or outside of the country

    • US visa must be valid

    • Must be at least 21 years old

    • Fluency in English is not required for application; however, participation in local community programming is highly recommended

    • Painting, photography, mixed media, drawing, and video installations are encouraged. Please note that equipment is limited, and artists are welcome to bring any supplemental equipment if needed.

    • PDF of the artist’s portfolio and CV (in English)

    • PDF of project proposal or body of work with up to ten but no fewer than five images or videos of example works, and an artist statement. (Optional)
      Proposals may include a new project or series in development that would benefit from the time and resources of the residency to be completed.

    • Letters of recommendation are encouraged but not required

    • Deadline: April, 30 of 2026, at 11:59 pm EST.

    • Studio space and residency in partnership with El Espacio 23

    • Studio visit by The55Project members and collectors

    • Studio visit with local curators

    • Open studio visits for the community

    • Solo exhibition during Open Studio

  • (Funded by The55Project and El Espacio 23)

    • Apartment for the extent of the residency at El Espacio 23

    • US$ 1,200.00 stipend (for meals and local transportation)

    • Roundtrip airfare from anywhere in Latin America, Central America, and the United States

    • Travel insurance

    • Transportation to and from the airport

    • Installation and de-installation are included

    • Date: October 2026

    • Duration of residency: 3-4 weeks

Jennifer Inacio

Flavia Macuco

Flavia Macuco is the Executive Director of The55Project Art Foundation. With a background in Law and Art Business, she leads the foundation’s programs for artists, members, and donors.

FAQ

  • Any practicing visual artist, at any point in their career, who is at least 21 years of age and is originally from Brazil. Please note that if you reside outside of the US, you must have a valid US visa to apply.

  • Use this page to apply through the form below. Applications will only be accepted electronically using this online application portal. We recommend that all application materials, including images and video links, be submitted at least 48 hours in advance of the deadline. We will not accept late emailed or mailed applications.

    • Artist portfolio in PDF (English)

    • Project in Development in PDF (English): Tell us about the work you have been developing recently. This could be a project you have not yet presented and that could be completed and exhibited during the residency.

    • Letter of recommendation (Optional)

    • Artists are responsible for packing any artwork that needs to be shipped to Miami.

    • If they are works on canvas, the work must not be mounted. Artists are also responsible for packing any extra materials that may be needed.

    • Shipping and IPHAN will be supported by The55Project.

    • Applicants residing outside the United States must have a valid U.S. visa and a valid passport to apply.

  • While the artworks may be available for acquisition, the program’s primary focus is not commercial. Should a sale occur, the artist will retain 50% of the proceeds. The remaining 50% may be contributed, at the artist’s discretion, to support the mission and programming of The55Project Art Foundation.

  • There is no fee to apply to the Artist-in-Residence program. All costs associated with the program are supported by our partners and donors.

  • Please email  info@the55project.com with any additional questions about the program.

  • We are pleased to launch this Open Call as an opportunity for brazilian visual artists to expand their audience and further develop their research. While only one project will be selected, we look forward to growing our network and engaging with a broader community of artists. Even if your proposal is not selected this year, we may remain in contact regarding future opportunities.

    We reserve the right to modify, postpone, or cancel the program at any time and for any reason, including, without limitation, circumstances arising from a Force Majeure Event.
